1-Day Workshop on Protein Modeling and Visualization
About the Workshop
A practical introduction to protein 3D structure prediction and visualization using web-based tools and molecular graphics software. Ideal for students and beginners in structural bioinformatics.
Who Can Join
UG/PG students, research trainees, and life science faculty with basic molecular biology knowledge.
Prerequisites
Basic understanding of molecular biology and protein structure.
Session 1: Overview & Template Identification
- Quick overview: Primary to quaternary structure
- Applications of protein modeling in research
- Homology modeling principles
- Live demo: Retrieve FASTA from UniProt and identify templates using SWISS-MODEL
- Model building using SWISS-MODEL (or preloaded Phyre2 output)
- Download PDB file and open in PyMOL or Chimera
- Visualize secondary structures, color by chains, identify active sites
- Highlight residues, create publication-quality images
- Quick structure validation: Ramachandran plot (via SAVES)
- Discuss model quality, limitations, and next steps (e.g., docking)
- Open Q&A
- Certificate distribution
