1-Day Workshop on DNA & Protein Sequence Analysis
About the Workshop
A hands-on introduction to sequence retrieval, alignment, and basic analysis using online tools and databases. Designed to help participants understand sequence properties, similarity, and functional insights.
Who Can Join
UG/PG students, research scholars, faculty, and life science enthusiasts with basic biology knowledge.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of molecular biology and sequence types (DNA/RNA/protein).
Session 1: Introduction & Sequence Retrieval
- Types of biological sequences: DNA, RNA, protein
- Introduction to NCBI, UniProt, and EMBL databases
- FASTA format and sequence annotation
- Hands-on: Retrieve sequences from NCBI GenBank and UniProt
- Concept of sequence alignment (global vs local)
- BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool)
- Hands-on: Perform BLASTn and BLASTp, interpret E-values, identity, and alignment score
- Multiple sequence alignment using Clustal Omega or MAFFT
- Predicting ORFs and protein-coding regions (using ORF Finder)
- Basic motif/domain search (using Pfam, InterPro)
- Hands-on: Analyze functional features of a protein sequence
- Q&A and summary discussion
