1-Day workshop on NCBI Submissions: GenBank, BioProject, and BioSample
About the Workshop
This workshop provides a complete walkthrough of preparing, formatting, and submitting nucleotide sequences, genomes, and metadata to NCBI, following current standards.
Who Can Join
Students, research scholars, and professionals who work with DNA/RNA/protein sequence data and want to publish it in public repositories.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of nucleotide and protein sequences, and familiarity with FASTA format.
Session 1: Introduction to NCBI Submission Platforms
- Why submit to NCBI? Benefits of data sharing
- Overview of submission portals:
- BankIt (web-based nucleotide submission)
- Sequin (offline tool for large/complex submissions)
- Submission Portal for genome, transcriptome, SRA, BioSample
- Hands-on: Create NCBI account and explore the portal
- Data requirements: FASTA, feature tables, metadata
- Formatting gene annotations and sequence descriptions
- Creating BioProject and BioSample entries
- Hands-on: Prepare a mock nucleotide sequence submission
- Link it to BioProject/BioSample
- Submit sequence using BankIt or Sequin
- Common errors and how to resolve them
- Understanding accession numbers, release policy, and embargo options
- Hands-on: Complete a demo submission and track status
